On Tuesday 14 September the High Sheriff of Somerset, Thomas Sheppard, chose to host his annual Garden Party at Bath City Farm.
The whole team including staff, trustees and volunteers worked hard to prepare the party, dress the marquee and make the food for the buffet. But we had a lot of fun doing it. We put up a marquee next to the children’s play area and decorated it with straw bales and flowers grown on the farm. Stalls from 15 different organisations, including Bath City Farm, represented those charities and organisations that we work with. Each stall sharing with visitors information about their cause and work.
Talking with the High Sheriff it was clear that he felt that as Bath was his home city he wanted somewhere to showcase both the wonderful view of Bath and also a community organisation which was making a real difference. Twerton and Whiteway may be a part of Bath forgotten but the High Sheriff wanted to shine a light on the wonderful things going on in this community.
One of the many highlights of the day was Farm Manager Helen Fisher receiving a High Sheriff’s award on behalf of Bath City Farm, in recognition of great and valuable services to the community. This now sits proudly in our farm office.
After much pondering from the team, the weather largely held and we just had the slightest period of light drizzle. The agenda for the day was – 2 pm to 3 pm meet and greet and time to explore the farm, 3 pm to 3.45 pm buffet afternoon tea, 4 pm speech by the High Sheriff and awards.
Our new Director Brendan Tate Wistreich started at Bath City Farm on this day and worked the apple press and met guests that included mayors, former High Sheriffs and civic leaders from across Somerset. We welcomed around 150 guests. Our volunteer Harry did a wonderful job meeting and welcoming everyone.

Thanks to all the team and many volunteers who created, served at and tidied up from the Garden Party. It was a wonderful afternoon that highlighted just how communities and organisations and people can work together to achieve great things.
